What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Thanks for the article, Scott. A great journalist and role model for others. R.I.P.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Sad news this most certainly is because a literal living legend no longer is able to hold court. Definitely a great journalist and a unparalleled role model for style and simply the best for journalistic integrity. Do you have a specific thing that was favorite of your's?

Integrity? Scott, your knowledge of history is sadly lacking. Cronkite's reporting in VN in '68 couldn't have been more wrongheaded with respect to what was actually unfolding on the ground. Get smarter here.

Many things, but one would be the way he continued to speak out for ethics in journalism.

Bill:

If I write an article rebutting that article will you read it? I considered writing the rebuttal as a reply but I quickly concluded it would be too long for a comment if I did it with due diligence.

I think Cronkite was totally right about how FoxNews was designed to be a conservative echo chamber. I'm not sure what forces he believed drove that decision but after studying the issue I'm completely convinced that the presence of a large number of conservatives that believed there was an anti-conservative conspiracy in the news media drove Murdoch to found FoxNews as it is. Not as a political statement, but as smart business. Fox has become the #1 rated cable news station because it has no competitors for the conservative audience on TV and, thus, is drawing 100% of its target demographic. Plus, I think Murdoch knew intuitively from his time in the news business (papers and TV) what experiments proved only a couple of years ago: the average person watches news that confirms their pre-conceived views and prejudices about society and life. Murdoch knew he could make a great deal of money providing what is essentially an ideological mirror for consumers that want to view news that confirms their conservative political tenets. Not malicious, just smart business... but the outcome is the same regardless of the motivations.

I agree, but sometimes have my doubts about the "not malcious" part. Regardless, I think Cronkite must havebeen shocked and saddened to see the state that TV journalism is in today -- and not just at FOX.

I know many people who were born after Concrite retired, I was pleasently surprised that many of them knew who he was and what he did. He has had an impact far beyond his years on TV.

Truly an icon of American jounalism and of the news broadcast scene, a person that will be sadly missed by many. Walter certainly had my trust, in faithfully reporting the truth as he saw it despite the constraints he had to endure, both by his bosses and the government.

I still remember (I was thirteen years old at the time) as if it were yesterday, his reporting of the assassination of then President John F. Kennedy - the personal emotion that he displayed and then was able to choked down in order to continue his reporting as the professional he was.

I also remember his elation at our landing on the moon as well as the dismantling of the Berlin Wall signaling the start to the end of the 'cold war' as well as the initial collapse of Soviet Communism. Lest we not also forget the many documentaries that he also narrated.

I, for one, will miss him.
