A legend in his own time
Walter Cronkite has passed away at the age of 92 today. I have established this article as a place to mourn Cronkite, talk about our memories of him and recognize his achievements in the field of American broadcast journalism.
Thanks for the article, Scott. A great journalist and role model for others. R.I.P.
Integrity? Scott, your knowledge of history is sadly lacking. Cronkite's reporting in VN in '68 couldn't have been more wrongheaded with respect to what was actually unfolding on the ground. Get smarter here.
Murdoch knew he could make a great deal of money providing what is essentially an ideological mirror for consumers that want to view news that confirms their conservative political tenets. Not malicious, just smart business... but the outcome is the same regardless of the motivations.
I agree, but sometimes have my doubts about the "not malcious" part. Regardless, I think Cronkite must havebeen shocked and saddened to see the state that TV journalism is in today -- and not just at FOX.
"Uncle Walter" was the voice of America. May he rest in peace.
I know many people who were born after Concrite retired, I was pleasently surprised that many of them knew who he was and what he did. He has had an impact far beyond his years on TV.
Truly an icon of American jounalism and of the news broadcast scene, a person that will be sadly missed by many. Walter certainly had my trust, in faithfully reporting the truth as he saw it despite the constraints he had to endure, both by his bosses and the government.
I still remember (I was thirteen years old at the time) as if it were yesterday, his reporting of the assassination of then President John F. Kennedy - the personal emotion that he displayed and then was able to choked down in order to continue his reporting as the professional he was.
I also remember his elation at our landing on the moon as well as the dismantling of the Berlin Wall signaling the start to the end of the 'cold war' as well as the initial collapse of Soviet Communism. Lest we not also forget the many documentaries that he also narrated.
I, for one, will miss him.
