In my years of working in and debating about politics (I started in earnest in 1994) I had heard many, many times the old maxim that CNN was biased against conservatives. For those that don't know, I was a Republican from birth until May 2006. During my years as a Republican and even my time as a Democrat I had seen and heard things on CNN, mostly from people considered commentators, that leaned to the left slightly but I had never actually witnessed anything I would classify as an objective, provable falsehood that was anti-conservative. Then I watched CNN's coverage of the Vice Presidential debate on Thursday night.
For those that did not watch, CNN corralled approximately thirty voters that identified themselves as undecided from the Columbus, Ohio area. They were also a third Republicans, a third Democrats and a third independents according to self-identified party affiliation. The job of these voters was to watch the debate and then suffer being interviewed by Soledad O'Brien.
After watching the entire debate, CNN's pundits discuss it and then the host cuts to O'Brien in Ohio. The following interaction takes place, at which point I had to rewind and watch it again to make sure that I saw it right, and then I started writing this article.
O'Brien: Show of hands. Who do you think won the debate? If you think Joe Biden won the debate, raise your hand.
*13 people raise their hand*
O'Brien: That's overwhelming! *pauses* If you think Palin won the debate, raise your hand.
*13 people raise their hand*
O'Brien: Small handful there.
What is the deal here? I have included a poll and obviously there are comments. Utilize both and explain to me, please.
