Autism, measles vaccine link further debunked

advertisement

New research further debunks any link between measles vaccine and autism, work that comes as the nation is experiencing a surge in measles cases fueled by children left unvaccinated.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I told people that this "Vaccines are bad" idea was bullsh*t.

Don't believe everything that the government tells you. The only thing that you can be assured of is that if it is a government experiment, than there is good reason to believe that it is flawed due to special interest.

To the parents of un-vaccinated kids; KEEP THEM AWAY FROM SOCIETY! I don't want to be a part of your new plague thank you very much, and by the way, do your children have a say so in the brainless decision you make for them? Think about it as forced abortion!, that ought to change your way of thinking!

I just really don't think vaccines cause autism. I know they can have side effects and have caused serious disability or death in a few, but IMO the benefits outweigh the risks. Autism just hasn't been shown to be one of the side effects. I'm afraid there would be many more people sick, disabled, or killed if we all went unvaccinated.

Your post makes no sense. You belive vaccines can and do cause serious disability and death, but not autism? Wouldn't you call autism a serious disability? Your conclusion is even worse. Your fear dictates your opinions, not facts.

I believe children are born with a certain genetic factor that is most likely enhanced when their systems are "bombarded" with so many shots before the immune system has developed somewhat. People need to realize how powerful the pharmacutical companies are so they will publish whatever "research results" they want to continue profiting.

I agree with you to a point...and children with weaker system should have their shots spaced out. I did that with my oldest...but it's REALLY nice to finally see in writing what I've believed all along...vaccines do NOT cause autism.
I say that with an autistic daughter. And I'm so tired of hearing from anti-vaccinators that it's all big business. It's not. Vaccines are miracles of modern medicine. Go back 100 years and tell THEM about them...they would think parents were INSANE not to protect their children.
      I have to agree.

John, I couldn't agree with you more. I've always felt something in the vaccines is triggering autism in children who are susceptible due to something genetic. I feel it is the catalyst for autism in those individuals.

I also have to wonder if the amount/number of vaccines that we give our children have something to do with it also. I know the number of vaccines that I received is alot less than the number of vaccines that my children received. Keeping in mind that more 'recommended' vaccines are on the horizon.

You do realize that the theory that vaccines cause autism involves thousands of people in the pharmaceutical companies knowing the truth and not coming clean to the public. Thousands of fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters. Undoubtedly, some percentage of them have a close family member who suffers from an autism spectrum disorder, and yet they still take their kids to get vaccinated.
Someone, somewhere would see the evidence if there was any. We all think corporations are evil, but it's important to remember that they are made up of people. This isn't the kind of cover-up that could be perpetrated by a handful of executives. The developers of the vaccine would know, the testing and verification people would know, the outside contractors hired to produce these studies would know. It just doesn't make sense that not one of them would do the right thing and raise their voice for the good of all.

Its wonderful parents noticed an association with the MMR vaccine and the onset of autism. Their outcry sparked the mounds of research we now have on the subject. Without people noticing such trends these questions would never be asked.

But now that study after study shows no link between the MMR vaccine and autism, I hope parents will accept the proven answer. Measles kills 1 of every 100 young children affected, which sounds low until that one is your child. Kids aren't vaccinated until they're 1 year old, so an infant's sole protection comes from preventing others from getting the disease.

I hope all parents will both vaccinate their children to protect others and support future research seeking to find the real cause of autism.

1 out of 100? Please provide the link to your statistic. This is definitely different than the information I have seen. Perhaps in third world countries that may be the case, but it is especially interesting since there has not been 1 death reported in the 130+ cases that have been reported this year in the US.

Try these statistics. If we have to gamble with the health of our children, I would rather gamble the 1 in 100,000 chance of complications from measles - even death, than the 1 in 150 chance of autism.

1 out of 100 measeles cases die? What an idiotic statement. The CDC states that there were several million cases of measles per year before the measles vaccine--that was a lie. The worst year in the 1950's had over 700,000 cases of measles--a lot less than millions. The co-author of this latest study is from the CDC. They all lie and they all have a lot to gain from government-mandated vaccination and a lot to lose if vaccines prove to be harmful. That's a fact.

No DG-495098, that is not a fact. That is an emotional allegation. A fact is a piece of verifiable, objective evidence (something that can be seen, touched, counted, etc.).

Yes, objective evidence is the key word there. I would love to see some studies allowed to be published by agencies other than the CDC and pharmaceutical companies who have so much to gain and an astronomical amount to lose once they will admit the connection. I am not saying outright cause, but connection between the MMR and autism.

Finally we hear from someone on this board with a functioning brain and the ability to think and reason. Most of the time we have nothing more than highly emotional idiots on here proclaiming the pharmaceutical companies are to blame blah blah blah. Try to tell these nitwits anything else and you waste your time. I agree totally. I have always thought that it is some kind of genetic and possible environmental trigger that shoves the kid overboard NOT the vaccination. If people would have had vaccinations a hundred years ago, what a difference it would have made. Now - as far as I'm concerned and most of the medical community is concerned, if you are stupid enough to NOT vaccinate - not just pace them out if there is a question of susceptible immune concerns and your kid becomes ill with a preventable illness, too bad so sad. Why waste precious resources when you the parent was stupid. If you the parent wants to play the odds - good luck.

The problem is, the whole idea behind vaccination in the US is based on the idea of 'herd immunity'. That is, if the vast majority of the population is highly resistant to a particular disease, the chances of getting that disease are much, much lower than if you are the only one who is resistant.

It's important to realize that vaccines are not 100% effective, and even if they are effective they don't prevent 100% of all instances of disease. In other words, if I get the MMR vaccine, there is a chance (about 5-10%) that my body will not produce antibodies and the vaccine won't do anything for me. There is also a chance, even if my body produces antibodies, that given enough exposure I will still get sick.

Parents who refuse to vaccinate their children, in effect put everyone else at a higher risk as well. There are some areas of the US now where 20% of the child population is unvaccinated. When (not if) an outbreak occurs, it will put much more than those 20% at risk of infection.

Just the media trying to cover up something else. They are having problems with the cervical cancer vaccine and they want to focus on something else. It is just a big business that has the government in their pocket. Do the research on the trends for all the main vaccines and you will see that they were on their way to being next to nothing. The issue is not the vaccines as much as the cocktails of multiple vaccines in one shot and the mercury in some of them. I don't know about you, but I got less then 24 vaccines. Now they get over 230 and you see advertisements for vaccines on TV too. Good luck!

The regular check-ups are just as effective as the vaccine is. Wasn't the governor of Texas who made it mandatory in that state somehow connected to the company who manufactured the vaccines? Hmmmm....

The concern of parents was about the high amount of mercury in the vaccines. This is what many believe is causing autism. The mercury deriviative is used as a preservative. But apparently is many times higher than the recommended exposure to mercury. I don't see how this story debunks the mercury connection at all! Please, someone do a study on the mercury preservative and on safe levels of exposure!

They did do a study and found that mercury was NOT the cause of autism. That article come out over a year ago but some people cannot let it go. This article debunks the FIRST ever claim about a link to childhood vaccinations to autism. Finally now all claims about the vaccines have been address and researched by doctors (with degrees) and medical organizations funded by the government and private money. Please stop with the conspiracy already. Oh and by the way, as a precaution they removed the mercury additives back in 2001 with the majority of circulation ending in 2003.

Of course it was the therimosal (mercury) that caused the spike in autism 10 years ago, since our government quietly took it out, those rates have dropped. Mercury poisoning has nearly identical neurological effects and closely mimics the symptoms of autism. Yes, now that they have removed the mercury from the vaccines, you should get your children vaccinated, and in fact my children are up to date.
My point is that this article about the mmr vaccine has little to do with the real debate. Parents of children w/ autism have maintained that since the government upped the "recommended" vaccines for infants ages 3mo to 15mo in the 90's, the amount of mercury they were actually injecting in a child of that body weight exceeded the mercury poisoning limit. Then even though "it wasn't the mercury" they removed it from the vaccines.
Wake up people. Your government doesn't always have your best interests at heart.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) September 13, 2004 -- THE TWENTY FIVE FACTS PRESENTED IN THE BOOK TITLED: MERCURY: THE WINGED MESSENGER.

Fact # 1 Mercury is one of the most poisonous substances known to medical science.

Fact # 2 Thimerosal, is a chemical that was used as a preservative in children's vaccines that was intentionally added to the vaccines to increase profits by way of multi dose bottles that were given to millions of our children.

Fact # 3 Thimerosal is 49.6% MERCURY, a proven and deadly neuro-toxin that causes permanent brain damage. The Material Safety Data Sheet (M.S.D.S.) confirms toxicity fears.

Fact # 4 Hundreds of Thousands of children received as much as 40 times the safe level for mercury exposure as established by the Environmental Protection Agency ( E.P.A.) from the thimerosal that was used in the vaccines.

Fact # 5 The pharmaceutical industry stocks exploded in value from 1986 to 1999. This was the direct result of federal mandates requiring vaccines for all school children.

Fact # 6 There has been over 700 waivers of the conflict of interest rule by the F.D.A., C.D.C., and the N.I.H regarding paid consultancy from the drug industry. Congressman Dan Burton of Indiana has called this a "VIOLATION OF THE PUBLICS TRUST".

Fact # 7 Former President Bush (41) was appointed to the Eli Lilly board of directors and lobbied for additional tax breaks until the Supreme Court itself told him to stop.

Fact # 8 Former Vice President Quayle's family controlled Eli Lilly during that time frame. As a result of Bush's appointment to the Eli Lilly Board of Directors, it is suspected that Dan Quayle was selected as the Vice Presidential Candidate.

Fact # 9 Present and former Eli Lilly executives were employed with the current Bush Administration.

Fact # 10 The Current Administration has tried to insert an eleventh hour Eli Lilly Rider provision in the Homeland Security Bill, that illegally protected the drug industry at the expense of thousands of mercury poisoned children.

Fact # 11 The current administration tried to "SEAL" CDC documents that proved the danger to children from the thimerosal additive used in the vaccines.

Fact # 12 The CDC tried to bury documented reports on thimerosal. They deliberately marked public documents with the phrase "DO NOT COPY OR RELEASE" This violated most consumer protection laws.

Fact # 13 The drug industry has paid consultants that tried to disprove the relationship between autism and mercury poisoning from the multi doses of thimerosal that was given to our children.

Fact # 14 The symptoms of mercury poisoning and that of autism are IDENTICAL.

Fact # 15 The onset of "Autism" has exploded in the last 15 years to epidemic levels.

Fact # 16 This onset occurred when the multi dose vaccines containing the thimerosal was given to our children on multiple occasions during the first two years of a childs life.

Fact # 17 The U.S. Government and state governments require ALL children to have
21 mandated vaccines before being admitted to schools. Most of these vaccines contained the Thimerosal / Mercury up to the year 2001. The current flu vaccine still contains thimerosal.

Fact # 18 The pet vaccine industry took thimerosal out of pet vaccines over ten years
ago because of known risks to animals.

Fact # 19 Eli Lilly Company distorted information on the dangers of thimerosal as early as 1930. This has been proven by internal Eli Lilly documents and Congressional investigations by Congressman Burton's committee on Government Reform.

Fact # 20 The U.S. Government has a three year statute of limitation vaccine court of law, that has illegally protected the drug industry by way of violating the U.S. Constitution. This court has and will dismiss law suits because of this illegal three year statute.....This in essence is obstruction of justice and violates the Constitutional rights of these vaccine injured children.

Fact # 21 Eli Lilly and other drug giants have contributed large sums of money to the political process.

Fact # 22 The drug industry never disclosed that their baby vaccine products contained this dangerous mercury additive. Parents were never warned or notified.

Fact # 23 Congressman Burton of Indiana has proposed bringing criminal charges against those who are responsible for this national tragedy.

Fact # 24 There have been over 120,000 documented cases of "AUTISM" - Mercury poisoning to our children. Another 250,000 cases are suspected.

These children will require care and support for the rest of their lives. The costs to the parents will exceed $ 2 million dollars per injured child. These are crimes against humanity. Children's lives have been destroyed in favor of pharmaceutical profits.

Fact # 25 Majority leader Bill Frist has proposed a new law that again illegally protects The pharmaceutical industry by way of violating the Constitutional Rights of over 120,000 vaccine injured children. Title ll of this proposed law is an atrocity. The rights of these children and that of their parents MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS.

The American people deserve the TRUTH!

Please get a life. Not everything in life is a conspiracy against you. This woman wrote the book because her son had autism and she needed to blame someone. The book was published in 2004 and since RADICAL changes have been made in regards to vaccines but no one wants to realize the good it does. They just want to cling to the idea of someone to blame, someone to sue, some one out to get them, someone other than them to blame for children unnecessarily dying TODAY of preventable diseases. Sad.

danwill, I wonder how many people are even aware of the danger from DHMO?
It is everywhere, and you almost never hear about it.
This is a danger we should be alerted to, but as usual, the media (and our education) lets us down.

It's not about believing what I see in writing. It's about confirming what I see everyday with my child. Autism runs in my husband's family, we were not surprised when we saw aspects of it in our second child early on. But, even we were slow to realize just how bad she was. We, who were aware, and watching for it. I'm so glad that I decided to get her tested, just in case. She is now almost three and getting wonderful intervention. She's made so much progress, and I have great hopes for her future. I have to wonder how many parents refuse to see what is right in front of them, and then blame the vaccines for "destroying" their child. I find it sad really. To believe that your child COULD have been normal and was purposely harmed by big business...that's really sad. My daughter came this way, and I love her this way, and I wouldn't change her for the world. She is my angel.

Most people who have Hep B, don't know how they got it. It's not just a sexually transmitted disease. Check out how long it lives on inanimate objects...

Person-to-person transmission of HBV has been well documented in situations of close personal contact, specifically among household members. It is presumed that in these settings transmission occurs from skin lesions (such as eczema or impetigo) or sharing of blood-contaminated objects (such as toothbrushes or razors), although the specific pathway of transdermal exposure is rarely identified. Since HBV is stable on environmental surfaces for at least 7 days, indirect inoculation may occur via inanimate objects.

SEVEN DAYS!!! This is Hep B folkes! If you think it's a sexually transmitted disease...you're nuts.

How about getting rid of the FDA altogether, then see how many people get sick and die.

I worked in a Doctor's office for 7 years. We seen only children and infants. We gave these shots and other some minor side effects we did not see any of the things that are in the news today. I had my 2 kids get the shots and they are just fine. Oh by the way this was back in the 70's. I hope these parents who don't get the shots realize what they are exposing other children to. I have seen what mumps and measles can do to some and it is not pretty and then you have the child to weak to fight off these and they die and all these parents who don't get the shots can is I am sorry I don't believe in the shots. Some comfort to a Mother and Father who just lost a child to measles. Get the shots for a life of a child. As always just my opinion.

Troubling. You worked in a doctors' office for 7 years without having much of a grasp on the english language. On a side note... the recommended dosage and number of multiple shots given during (1) appointment almost doubled from the 70's to early 90's. Unfortunatley, it is the combination of these shots that ups the amount of mercury that the infant is exposed to in one sitting, thus over-exposing the child. I agree you should immunize your child. But our government has a lot of explaining to do about the spike in autism in the late 90's.

Yeah.. while we are at it.. lets study autism effects on Children in Japan and other asian cultures and well as cultures up north on the effects of eating fish. If Mercury is the cause, then we should ban eating of all fish right. Give me a break you sheep.. the reason you had so many cases explode in this one instance is because they changed the definition of autism to autism.. before that they were considered retarded. they just reclassified the condition..

IN fact a few months ago, they found the cause of autism... a defective gene in the brain that kicks in around when the baby is 1 or 2... this is another "don't blame me.. blame someone else" liberal crap..

Yes, it is not your fault that you passed a defective gene to your child, but you did, live with it, make your peace with it, and make the childs life better. If your mercury conspiracy theory were true, ALL of us would have autism.. or at least more than half of us.

                                                        Moronic sheep....

While eating mercurt tainted fish, you are overlooking a glaring difference...the toxins in vaccines, mercury or thimersol or pick any other of a handful, are injected directly into a kids bloodstream, having instant access to the childs brain. All defenses bypassed. When you ingest mercury or other toxins, you have multiple layers of filtration before the toxin makes it to your brain and neurolgiocal system.
not sure why you are so scared of the truth here toastee, but if you aren't just a pissed off yahoo, do some digging on the real facts. you will see regions that havent vaccinated have avoided the rampage of these neurological disorders, and you will find a host of other info that by your tone i doubt you're willing to accept.

I had the Hepatitis B vaccination and within days I developed an auto-immune disorder. So please don't tell me that vaccinations do not trigger certain conditions in people. I would venture to guess that there aren't too many people here who are scientific researches, so before assuming that everything which the government tells you is correct, know that there is always more to the story than they may lead you to believe. As a side note, I believe one must have a genetic weakness first, and that in combination with the vaccination can trigger a disorder. From a scientific view that view point seems more sound than what is explained in this article.

How many in your family have auto immune disorders? Maybe you should get the genetics of your disorder checked into. You maybe right that certain shots could possible bring out auto immune issues in some but you have to admit that the link to childhood vaccines is very rare. But to blame the government...you just may be in the small percent that have adverse reactions that are known and PROVEN related to these shots. You should be genetically tested. Oh and check for the conspiracy gene too. Maybe that can be removed.

You will still refuse to vaccinate your children, mostly because you have no idea what an actual outbreak of disease is like. You have no idea what public health has done for you and our standard of living. If only there was a vaccine for stupidity, but alas you would probably refuse that as well.

My husband was in Iraq and only received the first few shots in a vaccine series for Anthrax. Then the stopped giving it and NEVER TOLD ANYBODY WHY. Obviously, there was a problem with the shot. And if there wasn't, then why haven't they explained why they pulled it? He's asked direct questions, and has been refused an answer from the government EVERY TIME. Have you heard about the FDA lately? The FDA itself admits its so underfunded that it can't adequately do its job, and many people have resigned due to ethical objections about corrupt supervisors. We're not blind. And we don't just roam the internet until we get what we want. I know firsthand that the government protects its pockets before its people, and in my husband's case, before its soldiers.

So let's see, questionable value against a non-existant threat, known incidents of negative side effects, and high cost.
The rationale for giving it was that some protection was better than no protection.

And anthrax is NOT a big enough threat in the Middle East all of a sudden? Funny how that's what the government keeps saying and has said is a HUGE threat. Bioterror and that the terrorists have access to anthrax and other hazardous chemicals, but now it's not that big of a deal and isn't so threatening? I think that's a LITTLE inconsistent on the government's part. Either way, they created hype in one direction or the other.

Do you know what some of the men in the military have been instructed to do that isn't honest and you would never believe because it's a "conspiracy"? Don't you think it's interesting that we haven't been attacked again, in so many years, even though terrorism is supposedly such a giant threat? You can't attribute it to TSA being so great in airports, every single study has said they're a joke and IEDs can be and HAVE BEEN sneaked through in security tests. You don't think our government is in bed with a few important people? Get a clue. I don't think everything is a conspiracy. Far from it. But I know that money talks BIG TIME, and people who have the power to seal important files and documents and keep it from the public definitely do that. In your little world where your government is all hearts and flowers, do you poo rainbows and eat cupcakes with fairies, too? You're BLIND if you think this entire government is so honest and forthcoming with the public in instances where they've screwed up big time.

The "study" therefore is a joke and is not worthy of mention, much less publication. If you have such a small study and something profound -- like 23 or 24 out of 25 -- responds to a treatment or some such thing, then the responsible thing to do is a larger, double-blind, peer-reviewed study to see if there truly is a statistically significant result. Period. Otherwise, anyone can say something equally ridiculous, like 98% of cancer victims drank orange juice at breakfast. Coincidence does not equal causation. PROVE it through a valid study.

In fact, your "coincidence-causation" argument could be used better against the original. The new one had 25 in the autism group, and another 13 in the control. The power calculation, which is the likelihood that a study will be meaningful after statistical analysis, comparing these two result in the new article being around 9 times more "powerful" than the original. But this is how science works: very slowly. This is the first step. More studies will come out. I could go into details comparing the two, but there are experts who have done and will do that. People can spend almost a decade in medical, basic science, or statistics training. We're not out to get you. Trust your doctor; most are good and want what's best for their patients. Vaccines are miracles of medicine The last thing I want to see is a bunch of innocent kids get really sick.
