Why shouldn't we? We didn't have as many of these issues prior to forming the NAFTA and developing the Free Trade agreement with China, as well as, other newly included countries. Sounds like you have a special interest in Mexico.

Pfffft!

The latest guess from the FDA. Here's a waste of tax dollars that could disappear, and nothing would change.

Give me a break. After devastating the tomato crop, the FDA is now after the jalapenos. What are they going to do? Blame each item in salsa one item at a time?

I take what the FDA says with a grain of salt.

By the way, I ate the tomatoes all during the scare!!

The FDA just hasn't had enough fun this summer. Now that the tomato industry has lost millions of dollars they pin salmonella on jalapeños. Good job, guys! Way to go. Ugh.

Buy American. I made that my new years resolution and it has not been that hard. Sometimes I have to buy things off the Internet. Mexico is not our friend they are like That pest always asking you for favors then tryin to steal your job.
It is time for Americans to band together and deal with this mexican thing once and for all.
Buy American it really is not that hard the media (owned by the advertisers) wants you to believe it is.

Is this supposed to be a big surprise?

Is the FDA just finding this out?

Is this the BIG news item of the day??

Oh I think they know the source. They just don't want to admit it due to the outrage that the American people will direct toward many in our government who are greedy and tied to Corporate America. They stand to lose a lot of their own money if they admit to the real source. Think south of the border.

mmm now the jalapeños?? well I live in Mexico on the-border and eat jalapenoños a lot, never get sick because of that, the thing is maybe this news are true but I get the feeling that there is always something to get people scare, manipulate the economy or distract them form the really important issue on their country ( like a war with out reason) ... well or maybe is just my perception like a outsider

Karla, the best thing about this country is the same people that you think are trying to distract you from the real issues "like war, or the threat of being blown to hell from Iran" are the same people that can't stop you from saying things like this. So feel free to express your perception of an outsider. That's what I want from my country that we fight for. We don't want anyone telling us what we can or cannot do based on Religion, Communism, or hatred.

Free the Peppers, and the tomatoes, and whatever is next. Oh and a lot more people get salmonella poisoning every year that we don't hear of. Don't you all think this is just the press and the FDC making a big deal out of it. Oh that's right they can do that because of that thing called the 1st amendment. Sorry it has to put a whole lot of farmers out of business though.

U.S. government inspectors have found the same salmonella strain responsible for a food-poisoning outbreak in the U.S. in a Mexican-grown jalapeno pepper in a Texas plant.

Just like I always say, nothing good ever came out of Texas.

Ok, now can finally admit its time to post on labels where food products come from and where fruits and vegetables are grown and be able to read it! I've said it before and I'll say it again, we need to boycott fruits and vegetables grown in Mexico. "date prisa y detenerlo". Oh and no thanks to the FDA, OMG are you slow.

And where do you think all the fresh fruits and veggies you get during the winter come from - try Mexico, Central and South America. And what about the beef with E. Coli and Mad Cow in the states. Seems to me like you're going to be eating a lot of canned goods this winter.

I find it interesting the government can track down a cow with mad-cow disease within a couple of days to the farm from whence it came, but they can't track down tomatoes with salmonella for months and then are unsure if the tomatoes are the real cause.

Wonder if any high production, corporate tomato farms needed a hefty write off this year?

allows thier children to form gangs which prey on us?

Fact #1: The conditions for the workers in Mexico are deplorable. They do not have a restroom so they defecate in the fields, or very near the fields wear the waste can come into contact with the produce.

Fact #2: This has been happening for over 20 years. It is only recently being reported with great fervor.

Fact #3: If people would bother to wash their food properly, Well over 90% of these cases would go away.

As long as we continue to demand the prices we are getting these conditions will continue and the problem willonly get worse. The amount of produce imported from south of the US beroder continues to grow year over year. Why? Because the labor is cheap, and this results in a lower cost at the checkout counter.

If you don't like it buy US grown organic or grow your own. But definitely wash your produce. Every piece of produce you buy has some level of bacteria on it, even if it is organic or grown at home. If you don't wash your produce you deserve to get sick and you are merely proving Darwin right.

are you aware of the cultural practice of putting toilet paper (used) in a basket instead of flushing? Since I am in contact with Cultural Mexicans, whose plumbing has long since failed in most Latin American Countries, they still practice this habit in the USA.

Most illegals are so uneducated about cleanliness. They refuse education (often leaving school after sixth grade- it's a cultural thing). In my Biology class, it was a revelation to my Mexican students about the spread of Bacteria..... Way to go "J" curve!

Why the Democrats want to take us to Socialism is beyond me. Mexicans are socialists who want to be in our Republic. They flock to California because of the liberal benefits package

Having traveled more of the world than not, over a number of years, food contamination has proven a challenge in most undeveloped countries. For over 200 years America has kept its food supply relatively clean. Understanding hygiene is a large part of keeping negative bacteria count low. Whether American or illegals process our food, washing hands after bathroom breaks, sneezes or changing activities is essential. The probable reason for contaminated vegetables or meat is sloppy handling.
Some countries in which I have lived are so consistently bad that staying healthy requires that raw vegetables be immersed for 20 minutes in a light bleach/water solution.
Maybe people who are concerned with staying healthy should eat only locally grown or processed food. Equipment is available to create a greenhouse in a garage or basement. These set-ups can easily grow enough food to feed a medium sized family year round.
                                    Check - it - out.

NOT ONE WORD - Why is it hat during this whole long drawn out episode we have not heard one word from FDA, USDA, or ANY MEDIA about how to protect oneself from getting pathogens from food. We have been wrongly told not to eat things (tomatoes, cilantro, peppers) when the source of the salmonella has never been determined. Washing ALL produce, never using knives or cutting boards for vegetables after cutting meats, fish or fowl on them, without thorough washing and wiping down with vinegar or bleach. Following standard, routine sanitation practices will protect you, even if pathogens are present.

Sam, because Mexicans have a cultural thing about leaving school and parents after you graduate........from the sixth grade, they don't understand what you are talking about.
When I taught Biology, ALL of my students were REALLY educated in my class. I took a solution that showed up under a black light. I put it on the door knob to the class that day I taught about Bacteria.

I often told the students that I knew they were fooling with the faucets at the lab tables. The
Mexican students were especially proud that they could "getting away with" handeling the lab stuff behind my back.

I turned on the black light for lab. The room was full of thier fingerprints everywhere. And "Jose's" finger prints were all over the lab stuff, faucets, pipetts, everything.
He had great respect for the schools property and my class after that lesson.

Oh yea, he encouraged his family to buy bateria killing soap. They worked at a local resturant.......
